Welcome to this unique AWL website. This website is based on the research project titled ‘Teaching and learning academic English vocabulary using web applications’ being carried out at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. It aims to provide a platform to the tertiary level students for learning essential academic English vocabulary. The Academic Word List (AWL) compiled by Averil Coxhead (2000) comprises 570 word families which can be quite useful to students for enhancing their overall academic communication. This site has a 100 word brief AWL dictionary which will be expanded further to encompass all the 570 word families.

The unique feature of this site is its corpus based approach. As many experts believe that the context-based learning is more effective and meaningful than the word by word learning; this website encourages students to learn each AWL word through their own academic context. The academic corpus comprises various subjects from the engineering stream and also some other academic subjects from Science and Arts. Learning words through context can facilitate better and faster comprehension of words. It also offers interesting quizzes on AWL so that the students can keep a check on their improvement. The quizzes offer immediate feedback to the learners. This site may also be used by the ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers to teach academic vocabulary to their students. The site will be enriched further in some time. Till then, hope you enjoy learning the academic words and improve your vocabulary knowledge.
